Tippy At Fourteen

Day 280: "We interrupt our regularly scheduled programming to bring you this announcement of a Special Event. It's Tippy's birthday!" Today his age matches his weight, but we wouldn't want to call him stout because he carries it well. That said, other than a tiny bit of extra canned food for his breakfast, he won't be getting any special treats in honour of the day. What he will be getting is concentrated Mama-time, either on my lap or playing games. Oh, he loves to play games! He's even invented a few, like trap-the-foot. When I'm down on my knees with him, he circles me, making head-butts, running his tail under my nose and making me sneeze, and then as he moves past, he trails one foot behind, sometimes holding it suspended an inch or two off the floor until I grab it gently and allow it to slip through my fingers. Then I'm expected to trap the other foot before he makes his next pass. And almost without fail, when he's tired of this game, he steps to one side and flops, at which point I put one arm under his head and the other curls around his back so that I can pet him as he kneads my bicep. He developed the routine himself and patiently schooled me in it until I had it down pat. Smart little Boy! They say that in a relationship, you get out what you put in. There's a lot of love here, going both ways.

Puzzle Puzzle 10

Day 362: It's dreary and wet, so I'd like to present a little something to keep you amused. There are ten differences in this pair of puzzling photos. How many can you spot? Each puzzle is considered an object with respect to determining if something has been removed or rotated, although in some cases, only a single piece may have been moved or had its color altered. Have fun!

Hey, I Know That Plant!

Day 236: "Hey, I know that plant!" I am willing to bet that at least 99% of my readers will recognize this common species. Chances are, you even played with it as a kid, bending the stem in a circle, folding the end down behind the head, and then sliding the bent stem forward until the tip popped off and launched toward the back of a friend's head. We called them "shooters," and my aim was deadly. They grew along the roadsides, in cracks in sidewalks and driveways, and around the edge of the school playground where they were readily accessible during recess. Yeah, those! You remember, don't you?

Okay, let's see a show of hands. Who knows what they're really called? Yep, I thought I'd stump you!

Plantago lanceolata, aka Buckhorn, English Plantain or half a dozen other common names is as familiar to us as dandelions and clover, yet most people will not be able to supply even one correct answer when quizzed. Why? I'm afraid I have no answer to that question, but we can remedy it easily enough. The next time you see Buckhorn in this phase, pick a handful of "shooters" and pop a few of your friends. In the split second that their minds revert to the days and games of childhood, shout, "BUCKHORN! Gotcha!" Kids learn most quickly when it's fun.

Bring 'Em On!

Day 251:
Some. Days. Are. Just. Like. That.
Where are the pigs? Bring 'em on!
