Bifurcation
Day 2: Calocera cornea is relatively common in our PNW forests at this time of year, but it takes a keen eye to spot it since it is relatively small. It grows on rotting conifer wood, in contrast to a similar and less common Calocera which prefers the wood of deciduous trees. Either species may exhibit bifurcated tips, so the best way to tell them apart without microscopic analysis is to observe the substrate. Despite its resemblance to the coralloid species, Calocera species are classified as jelly fungi.

Calocera Cornea
Day 362: Calocera cornea is distinguished from its cousin Calocera furcata not only by its pointy little fruiting bodies, but by its preference for decaying hardwood over that of conifers. Let's look at the Latin for a second, because in this case, it's descriptive of the growth forms of the two different fungi. "Cornus/cornea" means "horn." The same root word gives us English words like "cornet" and "cornucopia." Likewise, if we say that something is "bifurcated" or "furcated," it means that it divides into points (two or more than two), i.e., it is "forked." Much of the English language is rooted in Latin, and consequently, if we think about scientific names in terms of similar-sounding English words, we can often sort out their meaning and thereby discern some characteristic of the life form we are trying to identify. "Latifolia" describes a leaf with latitude, i.e., a broad leaf; "rotundifolia" refers to round leaves. That said, there is an annoying trend toward naming species after people these days, and had Calocera cornea been called "Calocera lewisia" for example, no such helpful clue would exist unless perhaps we knew that Mr. Lewis dyed his hair orange or furnished his office with oaken chairs.

Calocera Cornea
Day 245: Calocera cornea frequently emerges from its substrate following heavy or prolonged rainfall, and we've had plenty of precipitation for the month of June to date, so I was not surprised to find it erupting from a piece of barkless, downed alder recently. It grows on a variety of different hardwoods. A "cousin" species, C. viscosa prefers to keep itself specifically to the wood of conifers, but its tips are forked. Calocera cornea may be quite abundant where it occurs, as was the case on this particular log. Despite its superficial resemblance to the coralloid species, it is in fact a jelly fungus.

The Calocera Cornea Club
Day 48: Per "Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest" by Steve Trudell and Joe Ammirati, the growth of Calocera cornea "in large troops on rotting logs and small size set it apart from the other club-fungi." Just how small? Well, I didn't have a penny, so used a dime instead to show that the tallest of these might have reached a towering 4 mm. I discovered it along the Hugo Peak Trail in Pack Forest, first time I have observed it there. The species is not uncommon and occurs around the globe, fruiting in late summer and autumn. A member of the order Dacrymycetales, it is characterized by the Y-shape of its basidia (spore-producing bodies). Despite the similarity in appearance to the coral fungi, DNA analysis has shown that the clubs form a second, unrelated evolutionary group. It's a private club, no corals allowed.
